Interview

Tell us about your background and previous experiences ?

After 4 years of studying geography and obtaining a Master’s degree in geography specialized on emerging and developing countries, I shifted my focus towards European funds. Initially interested in European development funds, I did an internship at the United Nations in Geneva and then at the European Commission, always with a focus on West Africa. After that, I ended up in the field of innovation ! I completed my Master’s degree in an alternating work-study program at a consulting firm for innovation project, and then spent 5 and a half years at EMC2 cluster dedicated to advanced manufacturing. I was working on European project, building and managing proposal, and became familiar with the regional industrial ecosystem. Early 2022, I joined the Pays de la Loire Regional Council, within the European Action Service. I represented the Region in the governance bodies of Interreg programs and supported the Health, Rural, Urban, Tourism, and Social and Solidarity Economy sectors in accessing EU funds.

Can you tell us more about your role at IRT Jules Verne ?

I joined IRT Jules Verne as the Europe team manager. Our team is in charge of managing ongoing projects and developing new European projects in collaboration with the research teams at IRT Jules Verne.

IRT Jules Verne has a dedicated team for European projects since 2027, our goal is to continue expanding our presence at European level by leveraging the institute expertise in the 5 research themes and its know-how in conducting R&D projects. European programs are ambitious, and we contribute to their objectives by bringing forth European R&D projects that align with our technological roadmap.

Why did you join IRT Jules Verne ?

For its innovation capacity and ambition ! IRT Jules Verne is already involved in 19 European projects, including one as a coordinator, with a total funding of over €8 million… and this is just the beginning! I enjoy getting involved in innovative research projects, discovering new technologies, and facing the challenges of each project. I am delighted to have joined an organization that seeks to address the challenges of tomorrow through European partnerships.

The Jules Verne Institute has established itself in the European research landscape and continues its progress by winning 6 new projects selected within the framework of the European Union’s Horizon Europe framework programme. Furthermore, for the first time, the Jules Verne Institute will lead a European research project as coordinating institution. The Institute ranks 8th among all French institutions in terms of European funding under the “industry” theme in 2022.

Nantes, 15 September 2022 – Jules Verne Institute intensified its efforts to position itself as a leading institution in the European research landscape, and it ranks 8th among all French institutions which submitted new project proposals under the “industry” theme in 2022. After submitting 14 applications in 2022, Jules Verne Institute has been granted 6 new projects for a total of nearly €73 million, doubling the number of ongoing European projects in which the Institute is involved (total budget of €161 million).

The institute participation in collaborative projects keeps growing, confirming that Jules Verne Institute expertise and know-how in the fields of additive manufacturing, robotics, composite and metallic materials processes, modelling, simulation and characterisation is widely appreciated by the European consortia.

For the first time, Jules Verne Institute is leading as coordinating institution the European project: SUSPENS “Sustainable structural sandwiches and hollow composites parts for automotive, boat and aerospace markets”. As the title suggests, this project aims to develop composite parts in sandwiches and hollow composite parts that use up to 95% biosourced thermoset resins for the automotive, naval and aeronautical markets. These resins will be combined with sustainable fibres, such as natural cellulose fibres, lignin-based carbon and recycled carbon fibres. The technologies developed will contribute to drastically reduce CO2 emissions by several hundred thousand tons compared to current methods. The “Processes and Composite Materials” technological research team of the IRT Jules Verne will be in charge of the Work Package dedicated to the manufacturing of industrial demonstrators. SUSPENS project gathers 13 European partners, including the EMC2 French competitiveness cluster.

In the frame of another Horizon Europe project, SALTO “reuSable strAtegic space Launcher Technologies & Operations”, Jules Verne Institute will gain new skills in relation to the space sector. This project will make it possible to produce, for the first time in Europe, a reusable first stage rocket demonstrator. By operating a large-scale, low-altitude vehicle, in line with future European strategic needs, and by integrating a set of critical technologies, the project will considerably strengthen the roadmap for strategic reusable launchers. This will impact the vision of a future launch fleet improving space access costs by 50% and reducing environmental impacts. SALTO will therefore serve as a “steppingstone” towards the reuse of strategic launchers in Europe, which is one of the key leverages to achieve this vision. SALTO project will result in flight test campaigns to demonstrate and validate the technologies needed for a reusable launch vehicle. The “Characterisation, Monitoring and Control” technological research team of the Jules Verne Institute will be responsible for developing innovative non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies. SALTO project is coordinated by ArianeGroup (France) and comprises 27 partners.

The European project imPURE initiated in 2020 with the IRT Jules Verne and 19 other industrial and academic partners from 8 European countries ended a few days ago. The project partners took stock of the results obtained during these 18 months of development.

Context and objectives

The imPure project was launched in the context of the COVID-19 health crisis with the objective of addressing the shortage in the global medical supply chain by using less traditional means to provide critical medical devices.

ImPURE’s goal is to repurpose non-medical plastics processing lines for the rapid production and large-scale distribution of critical medical supplies (CMS) to meet the need for life-saving medical equipment. ImPURE focuses on the reallocation of existing injection moulding lines through the additive manufacturing of modular moulds with interchangeable inserts.

IRT Jules Verne’s contributions

The IRT Jules Verne has contributed its expertise in Additive Manufacturing processes for the design and manufacture of the Vaccine Spike insert, a part used to take the vaccine from the multi-dose vials.

The IRT also participated in the improvement and optimisation of the reassigned lines through the development of a flexible and intelligent tool based on an advanced statistical analysis in real time, using sensors embedded in the process and allowing to determine during production if a part is in conformity.

Beyond the health crisis situation in which the imPURE project was launched, the methodology implemented is applicable to any production line conversion through the supplier management platform, the development of digital twins, the production of inserts via additive manufacturing and the management of part conformity in real time.
